RENEWPORT (Euro MED programme)

Project description

RENEWPORT aims to address issues related to the impact of maritime traffic on climate change. It will do this by promoting the transition of Mediterranean ports to clean energy, transforming them from emitters of pollutants and greenhouse gases into centers of clean energy by harnessing the potential of renewable energy sources (RES). Project partners will implement concrete pilot activities and investments that will test the use of RES in different scenarios and contexts. In the case of Port Bar, the port will install solar canopies on the port parking lot. The pilot action of the Port of Bar is the installation of a system of solar panels and a canopy for the parking lot.

The main results of the RENEWPORT project are:

  • development of RENEWPORT RES of software tools (O 1.1), i.e. a web tool that will support policy makers in planning their transition to clean energy by providing practical advice, guidance, information and calculations of renewable energy potential for Mediterranean ports, based on their energy needs and geographic locations,
  • the application of RENEWPORT RES program tools in each port by implementing specific pilot activities on the adoption of RES technologies, which reduces the need for fossil fuels, reduces the emission of CO2 and the related impact on climate change, as well as the negative impact of ships on the environment in urban areas,
  • when the pilot activities and investments are completed, results will be shared, data and experiences will be compared, which will lead to the joint development of a tool for ports as clean energy centers (O 2.1), a web tool that includes a set of processes, models of techniques, tools, methods and services, which will ultimately lead to solutions that will be replicated in other Mediterranean ports that want to become clean energy centers.

The project partners adopt and integrate the solutions developed within the project into their development plans through documents such as letters of commitment or agreement of the governing bodies, depending on the approval of the internal provisions of each project partner.

In addition, a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed to promote cooperation in the field of transition to clean energy among Mediterranean ports and it will represent the continuation of cooperation on clean energy even after the end of the project.
