TREASURE (Euro MED programme)

Project description

The overall goal of the TREASURE project is to improve the quality of the environment in and around the area of Mediterranean ports, by mitigating and reducing sediment and water pollution. Human activities cause enormous environmental changes in coastal and marine ecosystems. Port areas become both the final point of accumulation of chemicals from anthropic activities and the cause of pollution that is difficult to limit. This represents a significant environmental risk to marine biodiversity and surrounding areas and a risk to human health.

In the project TREASURE, the aforementioned problems will be alleviated by combining three multidisciplinary elements: an ecosystem of stakeholders for the creation of open pilot laboratories, an integrated approach on environmental quality assessment and experimentation with new techniques that would serve to restore degraded and polluted port areas.

The specific objectives of the project are:

  • Plan, implement and exchange transnational testing of a multi-stakeholder ecosystem for better environmental quality in Mediterranean port areas. The change comes with the consolidation of mini-territorial laboratories throughout the territories of the project TREASURE;
  • Create a common understanding of new environmental assessment approaches in Mediterranean port areas, which will lead to the creation of a matrix for environmental impact assessment and risk management that is tested at the transnational level in the territories of the project TREASURE;
  • Conduct transnational testing of new techniques for environmental remediation in Mediterranean port areas, within a mini-laboratory format, which will lead to solid transnational results on their cost-effectiveness/impact;
  • Consolidate the TREASURE project solution and ensure its long-term integration, encouraging better environmental quality in Mediterranean port areas.
